Motion Reality, Inc. (MRI) has worked for decades to optimize the many factors proven in independent research to be critical in creating the greatest sense of presence in immersive virtual reality systems.

Head mounted displays are only one element of an immersive virtual reality (VR) system. In order to create a fully immersive VR experience, a significantly greater amount of technological capabilities must be brought together and seamlessly integrated. To accomplish this merger, we have leveraged our Academy Award™ winning technology to create a complete VR system. Our scientifically accurate full-body, real-time motion capture and dynamics data features provide the critical factors needed to create the high level of presence necessary to produce a truly successful immersive VR experience.

THE SENSE OF “PRESENCE”

IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL REALITY CANNOT JUST BE GOOD, IT HAS TO BE PERFECT TO CREATE A SENSE OF PRESENCE THAT MAKES YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE TRULY IMMERSED IN A VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT. ANYTHING THAT DISRUPTS OR DIMINISHES THIS LEVEL OF PRESENCE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES THE REALISTIC IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE AND CAN EVEN CAUSE THE VISUAL SYSTEM TO BE IN CONFLICT WITH THE VESTIBULAR SYSTEM CAUSING NAUSEA/MOTION SICKNESS.

Over many years, MRI has assembled a talented team of mechanical and electrical engineers, software and hardware scientists, 3D artists, mathematicians, and biomechanists, who together developed and integrated the required myriad technologies necessary to create an optimal immersive VR experience.

Our systems are proven and have been in continuous use in the US and internationally for years, and have passed the most rigorous tests and independent evaluations by organizations including the U.S. Army. At Joint Chiefs’ of Staff-sponsored Bold Quest Exercise held at the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence in fall of 2012, three Army, Marine, and Coalition infantry squads of up to 12 dismounted soldiers each executed tactical missions that included movement to contact, cordon and search, area recon, room clearing, and force-on- force. Our training system was the highest rated immersive VR training system and tested closest to actual live training.

Notably, our system did not have the typical nausea/motion sickness typical of other systems. In the competing systems, squad members were only able to stand and kneel in a few feet of space; in our VR systems they were able to run, crawl, and move naturally as if in actual combat. Their unique habitual movements allow them to be identified by the gait of their avatars after their immersive exposure. MRI’s system was also the only system to demonstrate actual telepresence via distributed real-time force-on-force. This capability was identified by the squad leadership as the most valuable training experience in Bold Quest. All three squads at Ft. Benning, GA fought each week virtually in real-time with US Army reservists located in a second system in Marietta, GA, geographically 132 miles away.

Many of the factors we have optimized that are critical to an immersive VR experience are showcased in our segment in Stephen Hawking’s The Science of the Future TV series which aired internationally in 2014. In early 2015, the FBI Director showcased our system during his interview on CBS’s 60 Minutes. And, in late 2014 and late 2015, the U.S. Homeland Security used our system to train 370 law enforcement personnel in active shooter simulation training in preparation for Super Bowls XLIX and XLX. For over five years, Motion Reality has provided, and still provides immersive virtual training capabilities to the United Arab Emirates’ Presidential Guard Command (PGC), as well as to the PGC’s numerous “guest” countries’ military and special forces as a critical part of the PGC’s domestic counter-terrorism training programs. The UAE PGC has approved expanding as well as upgrading their existing VIRTSIM™ systems to DAUNTLESS™ later this year.

Since our development of our legacy VIRTSIM™ system, MRI has continued to refine and improve. DAUNTLESS™ is the result of that effort and the successor to VIRTSIM™. DAUNTLESS™ introduces significant new technologies to create even more of a fully immersive VR training experience. DAUNTLESS™ leverages a AAA game engine to provide cutting-edge high-resolution graphics and video game capabilities thus providing more challenging Artificial Intelligence (AI), and real-world lighting and physics effects. Just as importantly, we more than doubled the display size and resolution of the head-mounted display (HMD). It also uses new hardware and an entirely upgraded software suite, all providing capabilities never before available in an immersive VR simulator. The end-result is the most realistic and intense immersive simulation training experience for elite forces.
